Artist's Comments

My monthly quiltlet for the personal journal quilt series at [link] . The heart in the top corner was the compulsory doodad. I still hate hearts.

12" x 12"

Theme: Things that are close to my heart

These things are close to my heart:

The full moon that draws the tides
Papatuanuku who nurtures us all
The triple Koru of my family, the unfurling fronds protected by their father's strong back
The Tararuas and Ruahines that define where my seperate worlds start and finish, and the Manawatu gorge that allows me to pass between them

These things are close to my heart:

The opportunity to choose to spend time pursuing leisure that so many women worldwide are denied
The senses that allow me to experience the world and my art and my inspiration
The economic luxury of being able to purchase the tools of my hobby
The legacy of a thousand thousand women who have sewn one piece of fabric to another to keep their babies warm
The women I share this project with, from whom I draw inspiration and strength and wisdom
My mum

Arohanui.

Koru - stylised fern fronds
Papatuanuku - Maori goddess, the earth mother
Ruahines and Tararuas - ranges close to my home
Arohanui - big love, love big enough to encompass the whole word.

Well done. Thats the most minimal heart I've ever seen.

Love your sentiments about being lucky enough to pursue our creative dreams and craft. I also love how you can express feelings of where you belong in the landscape and what it means. Our western culture seems very bereft of soul by comparison.
Beautiful sentiments. :D

The doodad in the corner looks nice! It's a good use of something that you didn't want to actually use. It's really interesting to read the description, too, and really heartfelt in its writing.

Thanks. The heart is coming off the moment it comes back from display :XD:

its a piece of cake to bake a pretty cake

Thank you. :XD: It's a bit heavy on the symbolism, but I had to find a way to stay true to me while sticking to the theme.

It's the first project I've quilted by machine - I've done crazy patch mostly - and I learned a bundle.
:iconlittlemojo:
Thanks! It's incredibly simple really - a bit of handsewing around the moon and straight machine stitch to quilt it.

I like the symbolism, thats what makes it art and not just a piece of patchwork.
For a first time effort at machine quilting, well done. Love the simple echo lines, works well.

Thank you very much :)
